Foster Homes Needed - Arabian, Paint, Pinto, and More!

We are experiencing an influx of horses being referred, and are reaching
out to you for help.

We are seeking a foster home or adoptive family immediately for a 7 year
old, sound, Parelli-trained Arabian gelding named Apollo. Videos and
pictures available - Apollo has some beginning dressage experience, and is
a sweet, willing horse who needs more hours to become finished. He is
near Madison WI at the present time. 14'3 hands.

Six year old grade Pinto mare - approximately 14-15 hands (judged from
picture) - brown and white - this mare has an old injury from an abusive
owner under her jaw - this injury was treated but is still evident in
pictures. Pictures available - horse is trained to ride - currently near
Winona MN - URGENT

Six year old Paint mare - no papers - horse was a rescue and went to an
adoptive family where she was trained to ride. Horse has been a great
pet, but is herd bound and very attached to another mare. Adopter seeks
to find her another home where she can be worked out of her herd bound
issues. URGENT - horse is facing uncertain future without someone helping
ASAP find a place for her to go - adopters WILL NOT WAIT.......Genoa WI
area.

12 year old Welsh/QH cross - Mare - 14 hands- trained to ride - owner is
seeking a loving home as quickly as possible. No vices have been noted,
but horse has not been evaluated by ASAP staff.

18 year old STB mare - rides and drives - tall bay - horse holds rear leg
up on occasion from what placing owner describes as a "pinched nerve" - no
vet checks have been done yet to determine exact cause.

If you can help ASAP with any of these situations please call Sue on her
cell at 608-792-5126 or email asapinc@mwt.net

TJ Ted Mak, Rio, and Casper

TJ Ted Mak is a Standardbred gelding who is currently in Cedar Rapids area
in Iowa.
He is in need of a loving family within the next two weeks.
TJ is very tall, but he has been ridden by a young gal and her mother for
the past several years and he has NO VICES. This horse is a treasure and
if he cannot be rehomed in Iowa he will come to the ASAP farm.

Pictures attached are those of Casper and Rio, both available for
adoption. An ASAP foster volunteer traveled to the Holmen area to see the
horses yesterday - and is willing to foster them both, thankfully, unless
an adoptive family is found!

Happy Monday to you all!

ASAP and Illinois Horse Fair

ASAP suffered a real blow this past weekend.
As you know, last year we were represented by local coordinator and
volunteer for Illinois Horse Fair and adopter, Michelle and her family. ASAP was unable to commit to the 550 mile round trip trek, plus motel,
plus diesel, coggins and vet check forms for the trip in 2011.

This year we were ecstatic to be sponsored by several businesses and
budgeted enough diesel and motel $$ for the trip. When we arrived, we
made the assumption that the Illinois association that had planned to
sponsor us had already paid for the stall costs.

What we did NOT know was that the Illinois association that had spoken
directly with horse fair breed demo coordinator and had planned a joint
demo with ASAP had decided not to come. To add fuel to the fire, the
businesses who had pledged to cover the cost of stalls for ASAP had not
planned to sponsor them since the racing organization had committed to it.

Long story short - ASAP arrived and were told in no uncertain terms that
unless the $320 stall fees were paid, we would not demo or participate. I
hung my head very low that day, knowing that the money so desperately
needed to continue to provide for the horses waiting for homes was now
being spent on being represented at the horse fair. We were able to
accept one donation for $100, but that still left $220 that no one offered
to sponsor.

Add to this, the $$$ spent in diesel and $156 in motel costs for two days,
plus meals.....(yes I used my own money for much of this)........and it
was about a $600 expense for the weekend.

We love our Standardbreds, and love our mission. We were willing to go
the distance, but are saddened that neither the horse council, horse fair
committee, or any racing organizations would extend their hands to sponsor
us.

We are, however, very very very grateful for the television coverage we
received, and the story for the USTA. It will all work out somehow!

Timesareachanging and Taser Gun showcased at Illinois Horse Fair
Monday, March 05, 2012 - by Timothy M. Jones, USTA Web Newsroom Senior Correspondent

Springfield, IL --- The “Call to the Post” sounded, but there wasn’t a starting gate to be found. Just as it ended, the two millionaire pacers stepped lively before the Livestock Center audience on the Illinois State Fairgrounds. American Standardbred Adoption Program Director Susan Wellman showcased wealthy retirees Timesareachanging and Taser Gun at the Illinois Horse Fair in the Breed Demonstrations this past weekend.

The ASAP farm in DeSoto, Wis., is home to 21 horses, primarily Standardbreds waiting adoption or to be fostered in Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota homes. All are cared for by volunteers and donations.

Timesareachanging won the Adios, Cane Pace and Little Brown Jug.

Led by Director Wellman and Timesareachanging, along with her son Zack with Taser Gun, they were followed into the venue by Jen Moore and Sidney Rain. The three minute demonstration provided the audience a glimpse of the breed's even temperament, good looks, and how track athleticism can be redirected to the show ring, trails and/or eventing.

Timesareachanging, a gelded son of Cam's Card Sharkâ€"Lodi Hanover, earned just over $1.5 million in 64 starts. His 3-year-old campaign was nothing short of brilliant, winning 10 of 22 starts and banking nearly $1.2 million. Timesareachanging won an elimination of the Meadowlands Pace, but finished second to Holborn Hanover in the final. He won the Adios, finished in a dead heat for win with Western Terror in the Cane Pace and also won the Little Brown Jug.

    Timothy M. Jones photos
Taser Gun raced nine years and banked $1,158,893.

Taser Gun needed nine years of combat to reach the millionaire plateau, nearly $1.2 million to be exact. Like a fine wine the son of Henry Letsgoâ€"Shootin Shelly, primarily racing on the Chicago circuit, seemed to get better with age in setting a lifetime mark of 1:49.2 at age 5. He also paced two sub-1:50 miles in less than a week. A 1:49.3 scorching of the Illinois State Fair’s oval in a colt stakes elimination was followed by a 1:49.4 in the final just four days later.

Ironically, the most beloved Standardbred at the Horse Fair never set a hoof on the track.

Jen Moore and Sidney Rain have developed a bond stronger than super glue. The tacking routine on the big bay with soft black eyes is often interrupted by a kiss here, a couple pats there. Can’t forget about the vitamins -- a.k.a. treats -- either.

Three horses -- two millionaires -- and one who has broken the bank with a loving relationship. On the track, or in retirement, these Standardbreds are winners thanks to Susan Wellman and Jen Moore.
