Cat On My Lap

Well, Grandma has eaten breakfast and we have cleaned the house together. Kids are off to school, puppies are fed and outside to play in their play area created by Craig, and Scarlet, the gray long-haired feline, sits proudly on my lap. Time to write!

We were in South Dakota two weekends ago to clean up our rental house and put it on the market. After a lot of discussion and reminiscing, we decided to rent it again on a long term basis. Lots of reasons why, but we both feel it was the right decision to make. Found a great family and looking forward to long term residents there. It was great to see friends in the Black Hills and go out to dinner with two old dear friends, Rick and Bud. Bud was so kind he even bought our little dogs some hamburger patties in a to-go box!

I am in between jobs and waiting for instructions to begin teaching after Easter. I am really excited to be part of a credible and quickly-expanding program. I thought I would have more time to spend with the horses and in the office, but perhaps my days are not as disciplined as when I am working? Kids, holidays, and making sure everything is taken care of rules my days.

I want to give a shout out to Jean P., who recently sent a donation of $100 towards expenses related to the horse fairs we attend. What a blessing! Also special thanks to Sally W., a placing owner who donated Five Dollah at one time, and Friendly Explosion (deceased in 2009). Thanks to Joy H. for her donation to sponsor Stylish Sharon in care at ASAP. We also received two donations through Halters for Hope - thank you! With 27 horses currently at the farm (all but nine are ASAP horses), we could not need support more than we do right now.

I have to talk to you all about the status quo of ASAP. After meeting with a Dept. of Agriculture agent, some good points were brought to mind. Long story short, unless I hear an overwhelming argument from placing owners or adopters, there is serious thought into releasing ownership of horses to adopters after two years time.
We have always prided ourselves in being a lifetime placement program. It is also, the number one reason why placing owners choose ASAP when looking at a future for their horses.

Without support from the racing industry, without support from placing racing owners and other owners, it is impossible to expect ASAP to carry the financial burden placed on us to be accountable for over 1,000 horses that have been placed through our organization. What I heard the loudest after my meeting with our state agency is that the caring adopters, the most qualified, loving adopters, will ALWAYS contact ASAP when they can no longer care for their horse anyway. If and when the time comes to relinquish a horse, this is where they would turn. If ASAP was unable to take a horse back into care or re-adopt the horse for the current adopter, then that adopter, after two years' time, would have the right to transfer that horse however they see appropriate.

Now understand, this is a very scary step to take. The placement contract would change. This could be continued until July and then presented at our board meeting. So, until that time, feedback is welcomed.

I had to dash outside - one of the puppies got stuck in his turnout - he put his mouth through the link fence and his teeth got caught - you'd think he was being skinned alive. All is okay. Incidentlly, the pups go in for their shots next week, then the week after that will be ready for the new homes. I need five more homes - three pups have tentatively been spoken for - so if you are looking for a sweet little dog, the Tennessee Treeing Brindle would be a perfect family dog! Think about it and let me know - it would be so great to have a dog go to a home that I know!

Midwest Horse Fair comin' up! Horses demonstrating will include:
Tyler's Tanya
Johanna's Flying Star
Squire One
Janimal
Remmie
Springtime Beauty
Pistol Pete N
Mini Happi Times
Sante Fe Freight
Fleur de Mal (?)
Victory Buck (?)

Can ya tell I'm not organizing it this year? Thanks to Carol Griffin for being our breed coordinator and, that reminds me........I'd better get my script to her right now!

Let's not forget horses waiting to get to their new adoptive or foster placements. They include:
Race for Home
Bart's A Bad Boy
King's Royal Fella
A Team Hall
Colonel Meacham (return)
Unmasked (return)
BG Star (return)
Fox Valley Wuvbug (return)
Comet
Fox Valley Terror
Allie
Ginger
Solomon
These are fairly urgent needs - in case anyone can help?

I would love to include pictures on my blogs, but when Craig hooked up his vinyl cutter to my computer it converted all of my jpeg files to Corel Draw 4 and now I cannot open any pics. Anyone have any ideas how to help me convert them back?

Until next time,
Sue

Weekend, Etc

I still have to get some pictures of horse fair to put up, but if you want to see video of the demonstration it is available at www.youtube.com and go to Illinois Horse Fair - fun!!!

Taser already seems bored. We had to close the rear pasture off to let it grow - patience, my friends, patience. Mud surrounds us, but I know this is necessary to get to warm spring air and green grass.

The weekend was a gift to ASAP and to me. We met a new friend in Louie from Madison. He spent Saturday getting to know several horses including Times, R Colelateral, Taser Gun, and Steelin Apples. There was lots of grooming to be done, with mud caked on most! Louie also helped me clean out a very muddy pen that the skidsteer has not had time to do yet. We shoeveled and picked our way through about seven inches of winter "yuk", but the pen looked great when we were done. It was so great to have his help. When he left, he also gave ASAP a $40 donation for allowing him to be there. What a gift!

Along with the many fine Standardbreds standing here, waiting, waiting waiting for homes.......we also have a draft cross mare who is in need of placement. She is a cute little thing - a bay with white star and little white snip. She has draft legs and a short body - a long flowing forelock and tail and a clipped mane. She reportedly had a Cobb/Welsh dam and a QH/draft sire. She is smart and a bit sassy, but loves people. She has the curiosity and mischieviousness of a pony, but is not one bit spooky or flighty. I have been told she is an escape artist, and knows where all the goodies are when she gets out. She has great respect for electric fences, and gets along well with geldings. Not always with other mares......you can see a youtube video of her on our site under Lexus. She was ridden by a little girl from age 7 to age 9, then has not done much recently but is ready to go to a new home and needs a job! Let me know if you are interested!!!

Jordyn and Robin came to the farm over the weekend. Jordyn had fun getting to know King, Fitz and A Team and she rode Remmie both days. Jordyn and Robin spent both weekend nights putting together picture greeting cards for ASAP - beautiful snap shots of horses from ASAP mounted on card paper and decorated - we may have some for sale at Midwest Horse Fair (for donation I should say - ahem) so be sure to ask for them. Special thanks to Jordyn and Robin for all of their hard work on behalf of the horses! I also want to thank them for being here when my mother decided to take a little spill while cleaning steps outside the sun room. Nothing major - not even a bruise, but when mom sits down or goes down she can't get back up without help!!!
So grateful to Robin for hearing her call for help, and for my father in law, Gene, for coming to help lift her up. Luckily it was a warm day!! We are also very lucky to have family or friends here basically all of the time for support.

Only one thing on my mind - "Let's ride!!!"

At the same time, I must think about the many horses here that need homes and where in the world we go to find the right families. Max Lucado is one of my favorite inspirational writers. Today's devotional seemed just for me - the bible verse for the day was "If anyone ministers, let him do it wiht the ability which God supplies."
Max goes on to say this:
"God shaped you according to your purpose ... Your ability to diagnose an engine problem by the noise it makes, to bake a cake without a recipe. You knew the Civil War better than your American history teacher...How do you explain such quirks of skill?
God. He knew young Israel would need a code, so he gave Moses a love for the law. He knew the doctrine of grace would need a fiery advocate, so he set Paul ablaze. And in your case, he knew what your generation would need and gave it. He designed you. And (this is my favorite part)......HIS DESIGN DEFINES YOUR DESTINY>"
Isn't that cool?

Have a great day, and don't forget about our many puppies who need homes!!! A donation to ASAP gets you the puppy of your choice - please consider a puppy!

Illinois Horse Fair

Whew!
Still recovering from a very exciting first weekend of horse fair at Springfield.
The Illinois Horse Fair was successful for ASAP and ISOBA because of the hard work and dedication of so many people.
I want to personally thank Michelle Daniels and Barb Daniels and daughters Christian, Katie, and Emily for putting up such a gorgeous booth display this year.
We arrived with Taser Gun and Janimal at 12:30 AM to find them all still decorating.
It was so great to see them and Michelle's wonderful power point presentation about Standardbreds was informative and entertaining. The demonstrations were exciting to watch because we had three young ladies ages 10-12 in the ring riding Rhyma Rose, Lonely Dreamer, and Janimal. It was great to see Rhyma Rose's beautiful single foot moves. The girls were just trotting around like they had been riding together with their horses their entire lives.

I kept things a little more low key with Taser Gun, since he had only been to horse fair one other time and at that time I was not riding him. He was a true gentleman. Still, I could not resist riding him around the fairgrounds and getting my fast trots in before and after the demonstrations. He is such a great horse - I would love to ride him at 35 mph! Maybe I will get that chance this summer.

The shopping was fantastic, and all of us girls made sure we got our share of it!

I want to also thank Tim Jones for doing the interview which was posted on the ustrotting web site this morning, and for taking pictures.

I want to thank Bob Walker and his wife for coming to see Taser - that meant so much - and for their help in getting ready for the demo on Sunday.

I want to thank Ralph and Bunny Daehn for coming all the way to Springfield to see us - I have known this family for almost 20 years now - Ralph has adopted three horses from ASAP - E.G., Monte, and Copper Cadet - and he and his wife's friendship and support after all of these years speaks volumes about bonds that occur within the ASAP family.

I want to thank the anonymous woman who stopped by on Friday and dropped off some colorful and gorgeous bouquets of tulips and some cookies. She said she had adopted through ASAP seven years ago but did not leave her name. Who is it? Thank you sooo much.

Thank you to John Cisna and ISOBA for paying for our stalls and making our presence at Illinois Horse Fair possible.

Thank you to Eunice D. for her donation to ASAP to assist with sponsorships and help the horses, and also to Ralph and Bunny for their donation. You are all very precious.

We are all a part of this great program that has served the industry for so long!

Oh I HAVE to give a "shout out" to the King family, without whom we could not have made the trip this weekend. With Girlie having 8 puppies that are only 2 1/2 weeks old or a little better, we could not leave the house empty. Judy and Jessica and Kelly and Ben - you are all so very much appreciated. Words cannot express! They took impeccable care of our house and our family of pets. It's not just anyone who is willing to attend to a chicken who cannot walk, a cat who has cerebellar hyperplasia since birth and walks like a drunk cat or rabid cat (LOL), guinea pigs, rabbits, and 8 little pups!!! I don't think there is enough money to pay someone for that effort. Hat's off to the Kings!

If Michelle is willing to share digital photos (yes I forgot my digital camera), we'll get some great pictures up of the horse fair! We have a mud pit here at the farm........so now to go outside and wallow in it.

Hugs,
Susan

ANNND........WE'RE OFF.................

We are looking forward to the weekend at Illinois Horse Fair this weekend. It looks as though (knock on wood) there will be no major blizzards to contend with! If Wisconsin is in the 40's as predicted, Springfield can only be at least five degrees warmer, right?

Special thanks to Judy and Jessie King for keeping watch over Girlie and her eight puppies while we are gone, and for feeding the horses. Thanks to Ethan for feeding and watering on Sunday. ASAP is continually blessed with local people making a difference for the horses while we are away.

I am enjoying a couple of weeks of sabbatical while waiting for my new career opportunity. It is unfortunate timing, as several things have acquired major glitches:
- our oven burner decided to explode last weekend while I was making chicken patties and fries for the kids. Luckily, it happened while we were at home - can only imagine what fear would have gripped the kids to see flames shooting out the oven door!
- one of our computers pretty much DIED. First the mouse quit working, then the keyboard, then the system. What do we do without our lifeline? Anyone who might have thoughts on where to acquire a good computer at a low cost please let me know

-having extra horses that we don't plan for at the farm has meant an increase in tank heating costs. Hopefully the warm weather will stick and we will no longer need the heaters!
-almost out of square bales and they are so handy for me to handle! We have large squares, but need more small squares for quick feeding and also to take to IL Horse Fair...............

On a good note,
Thanks to Ralph D. of Illinois for his recent donation of $200!
Thanks to Barb D. for her matching gift request from an employee giving program. It will mean $450 for ASAP in the near future!

*****Did you see the November issue of Hoofbeats Magazine? ASAP had a one page article written about them - thank you USTA!

Hopefully I will have my memory card reader connected and posting pictures yet this week!

Susan
