MWHF

Cobrador_kosmos

I just glanced back at my October emails and discovered an email from a
MWHF coordinator offering ASAP stall space for the 2012 fair!!!!!!!!!!
We even discussed barn assignments. So keep your fingers crossed - I did
forward that email over to the correct coordinator and hoping that people
keep their word to ASAP.

Hope you enjoy the picture of Kobrador Cosmos (or is it Cobrador
Kosmos?)......coming up from a drink at the creek during our last snow
storm. It is hard to believe all the snow is gone and there is even green
grass growing in places. I am thankful to have gotten one of my wishes
for Christmas - a mild winter and NO SNOW! Wonder how long it will last?

Thank you so much to:

Mary Ellen and Mike Miller - for their donation of $100
Mary D. - Iowa - for her donation of $50
Andrea T. - MN - for her donation of $200
Comfortex Mattress Co - for their donation of $200
Ray and Alice H. - for their donation of $100
George and Rose Bonomo - for their donation of $75
Pat S. - Galesville - for her donation of $30
Brenda of Colorado - Mc Dominant's "mom" - for her family's donation of $35

Thank you all!

Rodeo Basics is BUSY and FUN

We have had a really great turnout with kids ages 8-60 this past week!
Thank you to Tony B. who is donating all of his time to come from Iowa to
our place to teach anyone who wants to learn about roping, riding, and
rodeo.

I think I counted about 15 people in the arena the first day, and
yesterday brought about 10. We plan to meet again on Saturday afternoon
here at the farm.

We are able to offer this practice free of charge, only asking for
donations of feed or dewormers for horses, or a donation in any amount. Tony deserves a huge hug for his dedication and endeavor to keep rodeo
alive and thriving in our area!

It is never too late to join us. The roping chute has arrived, and steers
are coming! It can only get better!!!!!

If you have ever wanted to know how to rope and ride, ride and bulldog or

Thanks to Amanda Wilson for volunteering her time to shoot some photos for
our web site - had to share!

Merry Christmas from

and everyone at ASAP!

Merry Christmas To All!!!!

This is an ASAP Christmas letter - trying hard not to make it too wordy,
but my heart is so full of great things to say about the outstanding
adopters that have found their equine friends........I don't know where to
start.

With Brenda's blessing, I'd like to share a bit about her new horse, Mc
Dominant. Mc Dominant came into our program as a 3 year old several years
ago, from a loving owner Len Cummins and his wife, who knew Mc Dominant
would not make a champion race horse. Tall, reddish, BEAUTIFUL to behold,
Craig and I traveled to central Illinois to the county fair track to pick
him up.

It was very difficult for Len and his wife to say "so long", yet they knew
that by donating him to ASAP they would be a part of his journey to a new
home. He was adopted by his first unbelievably loving adopter and
traveled right back to Illinois within the first couple of months! There
he was retrained to saddle, and ASAP received many pictures of McDominant
being ridden English, and being very much loved by a little girl.

As things go for us in life, it became impossible for Mc Dominant to
remain with this family who had put so much of their money, their heart,
and soul, into this big, gentle horse. The adopter was courageous enough
to allow him to be replaced, and she became part of the decision on where
he should go and with whom.

Along comes Brenda, a woman that I enjoyed talking with on the phone, who
was remarkably similar in personality to Mc Dominant's first adopter, and
who was committed to meeting him. She flew to the MidWest and drove many
places on her quest to find the right horse. She saw Mc Dominant first
(and her mind was probably made up the first day), but to be fair she
traveled to Cedar Rapids to see Goin Ballistic and Izabeau, and then came
to Wisconsin to meet DT. I had the best day this past summer when Brenda
came to ride, and we took a one or two mile jaunt with her aboard DT.

It was a real toss-up.........but in the end Mc Dominant was the horse
Brenda chose to bring home to Colorado (not many Standardbreds out
there!).

She has never looked back. I received a card from her today that brought
me to tears, and reminded me why we do what we do for the horses. I want
to just quote a few lines from her letter.....

"I called Len and he is just as wonderful as you said he was. His love
for Mac is just amazing. Mac gave Len his all and Len gave Mac his life
and freedom. He loves the ASAP program. I do, too. Not a day goes by
that I don't think about DT. I wish I could have 3
horses........everything around Mc Dominant is Mc - McFeed, McWonderful,
McNaughty, McBuddy, and of course Macadoo- he loves everything! Thank you
again for helping us find our McFamily member. Again, all my love to DT. You are amazing and such a blessing to these wonderful, loving animals".

Speechless......

Another story arrived a couple of months ago, and I did write the racing
owner of this racing champion to let him know the lengths that adopters
will go through to protect and continue to provide for the horses they
adopt.

Master Miles made about $800,000 as a race horse. He was another BIG
Standardbred. His racing owner cared so much for him that when his racing
days were over he had only one place in mind for him , and that was with
ASAP. There was a little problem that may have prevented him from being
adopted if it were not for Beth E. Master Miles was not sound. There
were some old racing injuries bothering him, but it did not dampen his
spirits. He arrived at ASAP with an air of feeling quite good about
himself, and eager to be turned out to eat and rest.

Beth had planned a trip to see horses all the way from Mississippi, and
she wanted to come in January! BRRRRRRR.......it was frigid here......one
of the coldest winters we have had.......and I was lying in bed on New
Year's Day trying to sleep in a bit, when there was a rap rap rap on my
bedroom window. I don't know how Beth knew it was my bedroom, but she
tapped and said, "Get up sleepy head!". I had never met Beth, but we
became fast friends within the first few minutes, as I could see her heart
and her intentions to adopt not one, but THREE horses! She had been in
Illinois and gone to see Zagnut who was boarded at Dr. Anna's farm. That
was instant love. Then she drove up six more hours to ASAP to see
Bullwinkle, and somehow, someway, Master Miles worked her way into her
heart. Bullwinkle, in my opinion, as the safest horse for Beth and her
son to start on, since he had been ridden for years since he retired from
the track. Bullwinkle has a super personality, the uncanny ability to
just roll with the punches. He was "coming back" from an unfortunate
situation where had had lost quite a bit of weight, but Beth loved him. Before long, we made plans to personally bring all three horses down to
her within a matter of weeks.

We loaded up Miles and Bullwinkle and headed to Dr. Annas, and away we
went with the kids and all to warmer places. The horses were happy to get
out and see grass! That began the love story between Beth and Bully and
Zagnut (who was ultimately to be her best riding buddy).

Unfortunately, Bullwinkle began going blind, and lost vision in both of
his eyes. Beth, being in the military, was deployed for duty out of the
country and had to make sure Bullwinkle and Miles would be cared for
adequately, and Zagnut. She located a friend in Kentucky who agreed to
take on the horses, making provision for Bully's failing eyesight. Bullwinkle could not have been more happy at this new place, but Master
Miles did NOT adjust to his life away from Beth and his "home" in
Mississippi. He lost weight. He wasn't his proud self. The woman caring
for him communicated with Beth about her concerns, and the minute that
Beth was back home she sent for Master Miles. The response to his
homecoming was evident almost right away. Miles began thriving again. Just think of the heighth and breadth and width of these adopters' love
for their horses! Aren't these horses truly blessed?

Unconditional love brings me to my last story, about adopters who have
never really gone out and personally selected the Standardbreds they were
going to adopt, except for maybe one. Their first horse was won via a
raffle that ASAP had one year, and Mini Happy Times was the horse that was
going into a really great situation with a really great couple, Ray and
Alice! Well........Mini was sassy, in a way........but never too much for
Ray and Alice, who worked with her diligently, and now, years later, she
is one of their favorite horses to hitch up and pleasure drive.

I hope I get the order right in which they have adopted, but I believe
their second horse was Pistol Pete N. I cried the day that Pete left,
believing in my heart that he was supposed to remain at the ASAP farm. He
has an incredible soul, and just think of all the living he has done -
from being born on a farm in New Zealand, to coming in an airplane to
America, racing and being owned by Bell Valley Farms, then being donated
to ASAP. He was in his first adoptive placement, but that did not work
out (it was not Pete's fault). He came back to ASAP and I took him on a
trail ride at Yellow River and fell in love while riding him. Ray and
Alice spotted a true prize and wanted him, and we released him to them,
despite how difficult it was. Then again, it is always hard to let go,
but necessary!

Pete has taken up competitive driving with Ray and Alice for the past few
years and has taken many firsts and seconds, it seems. Mini has arthritis
now and probably won't be competing much longer, and Pete is getting on in
years, so physically it is getting harder to compete, but there is rarely
a day when Ray and Alice aren't out there loving and handling their
horses.

Next Penguin Beware, a trotter who made $80,000, came to ASAP. Tall, dark
and handsome! Sassy! Loving. Sometimes a weenie when it comes to new
situations......but always a goof. Then Sunny Forecast, a 21 year old mare
who had raced and then been a brood mare. Then last but not least, Ray and
Alice took Goodnight Starship, a horse who had been with the same family
his entire life since age 2. Poor Goodnight, he was displaced and did
mourn his family for awhile. Ray and Alice came to ASAP to look for a
horse that could be trained to do competitive driving with them, but, as
always, asked, "What can we do to help? Which horse would you suggest is
not as placeable right now?". Well........they asked that more than once,
and we knew that Sunny was, at age 21, going to be more difficult to
place. Penguin Beware had enough attitude that we knew whoever adopted
him would need to be loving and consistent and give him time. And
Goodnight was a big more skittish than we realized, and wouldn't make a
good "first" horse for a beginner. Still........soooo much potential. Ray and Alice took Goody home, and this year has been the best year of
Goodnight's life, thanks to them! He has been ridden, hitched, and is now
ready for competition as a driving horse! The only downfall is that he is
15, so a little bit older than they had planned on. They were only
fostering Goodnight, but the amount of training and love they have
provided him is priceless. Ray and Alice are two of the most incredible
people I have ever personally met, and staunch supporters of ASAP. I
can't say "thank you" enough.

This is only a fraction of the stories......but ones that right now stand
out in my mind and bring tears to my eyes. Perfect love, unconditional,
stories of people who go way beyond their means to make sure the horses
are cared for, loved, happy, and treated like true family members.

This Christmas season we can only imagine the numbers of horses who are
homeless, unwanted, uncared for, and unloved. Horses who have never known
love and may never have a chance at these kinds of families. I just want
to whisper a prayer for all of them - that somehow the spirit of the
Christmas season will move people and melt their hearts, and that those
who can make a difference won't be afraid to step up and just do it.

Jesus is the reason for the season! Thank you God for 18 great years of
serving you!

TRALEE, BOB AGAIN, ROLLIN JESSE - Need Help In Missouri!!!

Well, we have a situation where two adopters are seeking foster care or
adoption for two geldings and a mare.

Rollin Jesse is a big mare who will need the most skill level to handle. She is beautiful and sound, but is more suited to an advanced horseman. Her current adopter loves her very much and has taken great care of her,
but Jesse is HUGE and has a tendency to be very sensitive to stimuli. She
may be better suited as a driving horse.

Bob Again is a wonderful big gelding. Sound, healthy - requires
intermediate rider but keep in mind he is also a big Standardbred horse!
He and Jesse are together.

Tralee is a little gelding - a fuzzy bay with personality. He has been
ridden both Western and English and has done trails. His adopter is
seeking to exchange him for a horse that is a bit bigger.

Please, if you can help us by fostering or adopting these horses, get
ahold of Sue at

Vet Report at ASAP

Today our wonderful equine vet came out to the ASAP farm to finish fall
checks on the rest of the horses.

Brandy is 26 and we had to sedate her to even get to look at her teeth
(anyone who knows Brandy knows she bites at times, and we have never been
able to deworm her using a paste because she will literally come off the
ground if you try to get into her mouth. So, she was sedated and the good
news was that her teeth are in good shape and didnt need a power float!

I thought Arne would need it, as he is on the lean side. It must be his
arthritic hock bothering him with age, because the vet inspected him and
said he had really nice choppers that didn't need attention!

Bob Cook had a "wave" so needed sedation and power float.

Cobrador Kosmos had his pearly whites closely investigated, and the vet
said he had great teeth with no attention needed.

Taser Gun is fine, Janimal is fine, Cash Wilco's teeth are in mighty fine
shape despite the fact that he will be 30!

Taser Gun decided he was not fond of having Sydney Rain and Cobrador
Kosmos turned out with him, and spent the entire night keeping the
geldings away from the hay feeder. Sooooo....tonite Taser got moved. Herd aggressive. Ugh...and Timesareachanging went out of his way NOT to
welcome back Lakehills Texas from donated pasture, so last night he spent
his time chasing Tex incessantly in an effort to kill him. Tex is 26 and
Times is only 11 (I think if my memory serves me correctly).....so Times
got yanked out of his pasture and is now in the barn til I figure out how
make our turnouts and numbers work and hope every body can get along.

Welcome Sydney Rain to ASAP too, and Jen M!

So now all ASAP horses have had their fall checkups and are ready for
winter. As I looked in the arena I panicked - hay is quickly dwindling
down as the numbers of horses here grow. Let us know if you have any
hay to donate or know of any good fundraisers. The round bales we have
left in the barn are not suitable to feed, but the small squares are going
fast now. NERVOUS......

Pictures of Very Loved Standardbreds!

These pictures were taken recently and sent to ASAP. It is great to be able to share them!

Copper Cadet is first, followed by:

Goodnight Starship

Pistol Pete N

Mini Happi Times

Sunny Forecast

Beautiful horses, happy horses, and happy adopters!

URGENT NEEDS! HORSES - SOS

Copper_cadet

Two Standardbred geldings need immediate placement in Missouri - both are
trained to ride - one has been ridden for several years, both English and
Western (most recently Western). One of the geldings is almost 16 hands
tall, while the other is smaller at around 15 hands. Both are bay.
Pictures coming, but adopters would like to get these horses placed soon.

One Standardbred mare - tall dark bay - 16 hands and very stout - this
mare may be better suited as a driving horse, but has hours under saddle.
This mare is in Missouri and needs to be placed quickly.

One Standardbred gelding - Red Bud, Illinois - older gelding but sound,
sweet, and ready for a family

One Standardbred gelding in Michigan - Sweet Billy N - adopter is having
health issues and really needs Billy to be placed soon. He is a New
Zealand-bred horse who raced before being placed with ASAP - has been with
the same family for a few years now but it is urgent that he be placed.

For names and further contact information get ahold of Sue at 608-689-2399

Taser Gun Says "Thanks"

Thank you so much to Christian S., who sent a donation to assist in
covering vet bill and monthly medication. Every penny counts and we just
wanted to give you a public "shout out".

It, so far, is Taser's only donation towards his recent lameness exam and
treatment. As an update.....Taser is improving on the prevacox he is
taking - so far so good!

Farm Update

Wellll there have been a few guardian angels of the horses that have come
forward the past week or two.
We would like to thank Tracy for her devotion to DT and Stylish Sharon and
Thunder! And for her donation of a port-a-potty to the ASAP farm!

We would also like to thank Marie for all of the loving care he gave to
Thunder for the past couple of years. He went from a horse who was almost
euthenized due to his condition to a gorgeous Saddlebred. Marie, you are
the best for what you did for him!

Thanks to Pete for stepping up and showing your commitment to Sadie and
Gym Knoll Tons! And thank you to Marge for taking such good loving care
of Sadie and the other four horses this year.

Welcome to Jen, who has decided to lease Sydney Rain for a time. She rode
him yesterday and LOVED him, and we are looking forward to her getting to
know him even better in the upcoming months.

A big "high five" goes out to Andrew B. for his revamping of one of the
stalls in our barn this weekend. I have to admit I was ready to have a
"freak-out" when I saw the stall wall down and door off.....but today when
I got home from church it was all complete and the door slides
oh-so-smoothly now! You are amazing, Andy!

The needs are many and the funds are few so far. These are our needs:

Alfalfa cubes to wet down for at least three senior horses who will be
here in sanctuary this winter

Power floats for the following horses:
Arne
Bob Cook
Cobrador Kosmos
Brandy
(This may cost at least $200 total, if not more, and this is with a
discount from our fantastic vet, Dr. Jan from Winona)

Dewormers for all of the above and then some

Of course, we need hay. Lots of hay.

It was a great weekend until today, with riding going on constantly (as
evidenced by the poop piles in my driveway). I am only sorry I didn't get
pictures to share with you all.

Stay safe tomorrow!
Sue

Tragedy Strikes ASAP Foster Farm Family

I don't know why I didn't think to post this last week, but our great
friend and foster farm for four ASAP horses has suffered a catastrophe.

Last Friday, her barn near Blanchardville, WI burned to the ground, taking
with it the entire winter's hay supply. Luckily, 025, Comet, Thunder, Fox
Valley Terror, Sugar, and all Marie's personal horses survived.

We are asking anyone in the Madison area who has hay to consider donating
some to Marie until they have an opportunity to restore their winter
supply. I am sure that they would also appreciate any donations. ASAP
will do what we can to help, but if you would like to make a donation
directly, please email Marie at

mfkemp@wekz.net

So sorry for this loss!

Thanks

A special thanks to Kim D. of Stoddard for her generous donation of 50
bales of hay for the horses.
Every single bale counts - we would love to get 1,000 stored up for
winter, but realize this is wishful thinking.

Look for our Christmas donation drive - we hope to have a selection of
merchandise you can purchase for your friends and family for Christmas
while also helping ASAP. I have a special friend and newcomer to ASAP
that is helping with this - thanks, Jen!!!

Unfortunately, we are not gettting any donations for the sides we need for
lower shed. American Steel was waiting for our call today with deposit
but, unfortunately, this will have to wait.....

Special thanks also to the people who are stepping up to help foster
horses for the winter. Will update you next week to see if dreams came
true for some special horses.

Sides for our Shelter

One of our shelters blew down in the last ice storm we had in the spring. That has left the lower arena with only one shed that is 18' x 21' with no
sides.

I took a step of faith today and called American Steel. They are coming
out next week to put sides on the existing shelter. We will have to put
plywood on the inside once it is done.

Cost = $100 fee to come here
$320 to put two sides on

We will use existing canvas from other shelter to close the third side so
if here is a scuffle horses will not hurt themselves getting out.

We need to recruit donations of $443.10 total for this project.

Please give if you can, so the ASAP horses can be protected from the
elements his winter. Every penny counts - use Pay Pal if you can! All
donations are tax deductible.
If you like, you can make a donation directly to American Steel.....ask me
how.....?

Thank you!

Load of hay coming today - 140 bales = 350.00 .....GULP.....

Crisis Mode

Please help if you can..........four horses must come back from summer
pasture, putting ASAP at over 24 horses. We currently have no idea how
ASAP will have enough revenue to feed horses hay and grain without
donations and support. We are seeking grants and assistance, but don't
have anything in stone to make us believe there will be funds awarded.

To add to the stress, one foster farm is unable to keep the five horses
they have over the winter, and is asking for placement of Holly, Sadie,
Kung Fu Guru, Sydney and Deon by November 1.

The fall panic has begun, and this is only the beginning of what will be a
long, hard winter filled with the challenge of helping horses and
responding to crisis calls where horses in our community are being
neglected or abandoned.

Fall Frenzy

Look out ......... it's fall...........and people are trying to bring
horses to ASAP faster than we can turn them down.

If others can't afford to feed one extra horse, how does the world expect
ASAP to feed everyone's horses? Without grants, donations, fees, support,
we cannot accommodate all of the horses being referred.

If you can foster, let ASAP know now! If you can adopt, please let us know.
If you can give, or donate a load of hay, it would be appreciated more
than anything else you could do! As much as we would like to stand guard
at the end of our driveway, there will be times when horses will be
slipped in - we are at 23 horses as of today (counting our personal
horses) - we are at capacity. HELP!

Fundraiser and Many Thanks

Last Saturday was a time of first's for ASAP. A first 5K fun run, a first
ever ASAP tack sale, and a first time for entertainment to be here on
ASAP's behalf at the farm.

We want to personally thank so many of you who came for all or any of the
events here on October 8, but a special thanks goes out to:

My husband for his support.

My daughter for coordinating the 5K Fun Run / Walk
Congratulations to the Genoa WI Postmaster, Roger, for finishing first in
this race! My daughter Cherie came in second, six seconds behind him,
followed by Doug from Iowa. You all were amazing to watch! Thanks to all
of Rachel's friends for joining in the race, and to Cherie's fellow
workout partners from LaCrosse for their participation.

Thanks to Rachel for inviting Casey, Lila, and Rachel V. to help out. You
girls were so great with helping us fill goodie bags for race participants
and helping us place prices on tack items. You all stayed good-natured
even when I was manic! We could not have pulled it off without you.

Thanks to Kurtis W. the bull rider for coming over to help us for the
entire day and well into the evening.

Thanks to Robin and Jordin - you two really demonstrated what support for
ASAP is - you have done so much to help the horses. Jordin, we hope you
had a blast riding with Kurtis and Conner and Quin in the back pasture!

Thank you to Quin for spending more than 12 hours at ASAP assisting with
the race and watching young children and just helping out wherever you
could to earn community service hours. You said that you were
particularly bonded with Tilly, and so am I! She is one special donkey. Hope you had fun riding Remmie that day too! Thanks also to Caleb Frank
for volunteering his time while also earning community service hours for
De Soto High School.

Thank you to Lynette for dedicating two separate days to come and help us
get ready for the tack sale. Much of what we pulled out had been stored
but had must and dust, and Lynette was instrumental in getting everything
looking great for sale. Lynette, can't thank you enough - HUGS.....you
have no idea how greatly we appreciate you!

Thanks also to Lori H. for coming all the way from Iowa City area to be
with ASAP. Just think - driving ten hours or so to show support - there
aren't many like you and you are truly a HUGE part of the ASAP family. Give Sigi and TBone a big hug from me, and hugs to you. Hope that saddle
that you bought fits the boys perfectly!

Ray and Alice......I see you guys and just want to tear up with gratitude.
I think it shows the great love we all have in common with Standardbreds
and that is what bonds us all together. Your support goes beyond words as
well. We consider you great friends. Craig, especially, thanks you for
thinking of him with that special hunter's flashlight. He treasures it.

Diane and Duane - thanks for always coming to ASAP events! Mom and Dad
Wellman, thank you for stopping by. Neighbors Richie and Michelle, my
precious friends - we had so much fun singing karaoke til the dj closed us
down, and Chris and Krista too. I think we need to go on the road singing
"Seven Bridges Road"!!!!!

Patty and Dwight...........your presence here was especially meaningful.
Your support is priceless, and we hope you had fun. It meant so much to
have you here, you have no idea.

Diane and Shawn and Erica and Mike- again, you being here was heartwarming.

All of you who came to the sale, or the race, all of you who came to sing
karaoke, I saw you all, noted who came and wished I could have spoken to
each and every person. There were some strangers who came and left as
ASAP friends - some left donations from $30 - $100!!!! People came to see
horses and saw some who are noticeably needing special attention, and many
who greeted them with bright eyes and round bellies. We tried to explain
each horse here, and answer any questions we could about them. We think
that we may have two additional foster homes and about five new volunteers
after Saturday!!!

We also want to thank Kwik Trip for their donation of donuts after the race.

Thanks to Clements Fishing Barge of Genoa for their sponsorship dollars.

Thanks to Dr. Joseph Kotnour from LaCrosse for his sponsorship for the 5K.

Thanks to Kelly Wilde for his public service announcements to advertise
the event.

Thanks to Scott S. of Las Vegas for his AWESOME posters that also helped
us advertise.

Thanks to Grass Roots Barbecue for their lip-smackin ribs and the best
potato salad I have ever tasted. The squash was also amazing.

Thanks to Midnight Magic DJ who played well past the time they were
supposed to end.

We hope to do it all again next year, and I hope to post pictures soon!

My Cookie - In Memory

Well, everyone who has ever met Cookie admired her spirit. This little
Jack Russell terrier, born on an Amish farm, stood little chance at life. She was born with subluxed elbows, and if it were not for the mercy of the
son of an Amish man, Cookie would have died long ago.

As it was, David remembered ASAP, having admired the Standardbreds that we
try to find homes for. He remembered that the spirit of ASAP is often
compassion, and hired a driver to bring the six week old crippled puppy to
our farm.

I remember I was pregnant with Rachel then, almost 13 years ago, when
David arrived with a little brown and white bundle wrapped inside his
coat. Her head peeked out, totally helpless, with those little prick ears
and sweet brown eyes. David asked me if I would take her. I melted.

Destiny and God's mercy and unending love kept us together for 13 years. Cookie and I have been joined at the hip, to the point of frustration on
the part of my family that she always had to "come with". Cookie needed
me, and I needed her. Now, I ask myself how I will go on without her
there.

Cookie's troubles began in May 2010, when she was diagnosed with glaucoma.
Despite much effort by the veterinarians, Cookie lost that eye and then,
sadly, lost the other eye to the disease in December of 2010. For almost
one full year, Cookie has carried on, following me around the house
despite her blindness and crippled legs. She could find me when no one
else could. She was always there at night for "treat time", barking with
that throaty RUFF RUFF, as if to say, "Right Now!".

She loved car rides and up until this week was going with me everywhere. I gave her extra special steak treats and meat treats. Still, this summer
I detected something else was wrong, and the vet revealed she had
congestive heart failure. That was in February or March, but I remember
thinking I would not entertain any thoughts of losing her, and started her
on medications to make her comfortable and help the function of her heart.

This past week I have sensed she has been more distressed, and took her in
to the vet, but her lungs sounded good at the time and blood tests were
normal. I anticipated much more time with her, but fate had different
plans. Cookie became more distressed this week. Last night I prayed that
if it were time that God would take her, but she was resting comfortably
this morning and seemed bright. I fixed her steak and soft food and she
munched it up and drank water. She went potty outside. I propped her up
next to me while I worked on the computer and she seemed very content.

Then I came in after the farrier left this afternoon and noticed Cookie
had moved into the living room and was very labored in her breathing. She
scared me. I picked her up and we walked outside and she seemed to calm. She rested in my arms and I walked up and down the driveway, crunching
leaves and listening to the birds singing in the trees. I gave Cookie
permission to go, if she had to, and didn't want to see her suffer. She
nestled closer in my arms, and her breathing seemed to calm.

In my grief, I will share that I am both happy and very very sorrowful
that she decided to go. She was suffering, and her time had come. I,
being selfish, have so much trouble with the loss of my pets. She simply
stopped breathing, and her nose dropped further down into the crook of my
arm. There. We had shared her last moments together, and I hadn't missed
anything. I praise God for the 13 years, I praise God that I was not
distracted by life's circumstances, preventing me from seeing the signs,
spending every moment possible with her, and holding her when she went
from my arms up into Heaven where the Lord is now caring for her until I
get there.

I have lost two dogs that have each taken a piece of my soul with them
when they left - one was Mamie - who was 15, and now Cookie. Tina is
still with us at age 16. Looking at everything, we are truly blessed. Cookie, though, my heart is broken in two and my soul questions why living
things must suffer. Some day we will know the answer, but in the
meantime, thank you for being my best friend!!!

[Fwd: Pennsylvania Horses]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi friends!

We are getting closer to the reality of the rescued Standardbreds coming
to Wisconsin. They have been in quarantine for all of three weeks now,
plus a few days. They have been health checked and waiting for a
reasonable ride to ASAP.

We networked out with every single horse rescue and adoption program in
PA, with no one able to step up and either foster the horses to alleviate
financial strain for ASAP. No one offered to take the horses into their
program, many stating that STB's were difficult to find homes for (we
don't have that problem out here!). One program offered to take the
horses for possible suitability as mounted police horses in Philadelphia,
but requested $2,000 to take the horses in to their program!

I guess it all boils down to the almighty dollar, but we had some really
great people step up to try to help. For example, one woman in our local
area has offered to pay the quarantine bill for the STB's. When you do
that math, each horse is being charged $11 a day to stay there - $33 a day
times twenty-some days.........ouch.

In addition to her, there is a very prestigious individual in the harness
racing industry who has contributed $500 towards transport. A dear friend
who has adopted Family Counselor and Taken By Surprise and helped with
rescuing Wawatassi and JD and countless others has generously donated
$200. We have had several other supporters who have contributed just
enough to get to the $1,000 mark for shipping.

Marie, a foster parent to Thunder, Comet, Fox Valley Terror, and Sugar,
offered to continue to Pennsylvania after a wedding in Michigan to pick up
the three boys next weekend. She was willing to go for the exact amount
we have had donated. Then, she received news from her doctor that she was
unable to make the trip as planned. I knew in my heart that God was going
to have to coordinate this because it seemed as though all doors have
continued to close.

More shippers, more quotes - most at $1,500-$3,000 for shipping (three
bids alone at $3,000!~!!!!). I just could not get discouraged - there has
been a kind of peace about this whole situation since it began, despite
the situation indicating it was hopeless.

Yesterday we got an email from a shipper asking where in PA the horses
are. I told her, and she responded by telling me that they were going to
the exact same quarantine facility to pick up another rescue for someone
else. I told her all we had.......well under most bids. She responded
and said they could do it for $1,000. MITACLES happen!!!!!

So, keep your fingers crossed, if all goes well.......the boys will be on
a trailer Wednesday to begin their new journey to ASAP. I know we have
one horse placed with Jennifer already, after quarantine is
completed....but we really need to know that there are other people out
there interested? Please email me!!!! Craig and everyone else involved
with ASAP, knowing our finances, will feel much better if we know that
these horses and all ASAP horses have a chance at placement soon after
they arrive.

Happy Sunday and I'll continue to update you!

GRANDSTAND! HELP!

Is there any Illinois or Wisconsin adopter who would consider showcasing
their horse at Balmoral Saturday night?

I can be there to man the tables, but my trailer is parked at the
fairgrounds because my daughter is showing her horse this weekend at the
fair. HELP! I do believe there is a stipend for anyone who puts a horse
in the Billy Barn.

Brick Walls

Well, today I have been researching more rescues out East and transportation.
Shipping from Honey Brook to a layover facility close by - quote $250

Cost of quarantine pasture in PA from one horse stable - $200 a month per
horse until reasonable shipping is found.

Still no other rescues or adoption programs who are offering sanctuary
until shipping occurs.

Shipping rate from Honey Brook to WI - $1,400

Still so far from finding a solution on our $850 budget.

Hang on - Sonny, Split Five Hundred, and Isn't He Classy - we're keepin
the faith!

SUPER NIGHT - BALMORAL PARK

Now accepting requests from any interested persons who would like to
attend Super Night at Balmoral Park on Saturday, September 17.

I am requesting a Sulky Suite for anyone who wants to attend - a great way
for all of us Standardbred enthusiasts to come together and enjoy the best
night of racing in Illinois!

Also, if you would like to take part in handing out information at either
of the two tables or having your horse showcased in the Billy Barn (it
pays $100 or $150) please let me know soon!

I am not sure what the answer is on the Sulky Suite package, but it
includes a LOT for 25 people that night!

PA Update

Three babies still in stalls waiting for a ride in PA - a ride, or a home!
Weathered the storms out there, which I heard were pretty bad. Glad they
weren't out on that feed lot for those.....now wonder what God has in
store for their future?

Hoping for donations today!

Donations for Kill Broker Horses - PA

Zero dollars raised today, but we want to let everyone know we are working
on a couple of different options for funding for transportation and/or a
couple of alternatives for placement (possibly within Pennsylvania!)

Thanks to everyone for the moral support.

Sue

We Said "Yes" When Other Groups Said "No"

Yes, we are all full.
Yes, we all have financial struggles (some groups way more than others).
Despite the financial situations of all horse adoption groups and rescues,
we stepped outside of the impossibility and walked in faith to get the
help necessary to save the three geldings at the PA kill broker lot. We
could not have done this without the help of Race Fund Inc. They were the
saving grace for the horses.

We have run into a few stumbling blocks right now, and the situation seems
a little impossible. Yet, we will continue to look into the hope of
miracles for the boys, so we can get them to the ASAP farm, or into the
loving arms of people waiting to welcome them.

We have had many angels step forward already - thank you for supporting
the mission of giving these guys a chance at a second (or third) life!
It is not ordinarily our mission to take horses off kill lots - this just
kind of fell into our laps. And we are thankful that it did. There's
always a reason for everything!

Feature Article for PA Horses and ASAP!

We contacted a journalist from the La Crosse newspaper and she will be out
tomorrow to do a feature article on the recent Pennsylvania case and also
to find out more about ASAP, its program and mission.

We are hoping this will result in generating funds needed for the horses,
and/or homes for them, as well as the many others waiting for adoption at
the ASAP farm!

Status on Horses

The geldings are tucked away at a layover facility in Pennsylvania,
waiting for coggins, interstate health certificates, and a vet check.
It is costing about $33 a day for them to be there until transport can be
arranged.

At this moment we do not have shipping arranged. We are working
diligently on it, but must find a way to afford the shipping rates. Currently we have had $550 donated, in total, towards these horses.

We will keep you informed as we know more - if any of you have any
suggestions on names of shippers who haul in response to emergency
situations (rescue, etc) we would love to hear from you.

THEY ARE SAVED! STANDARDBREDS ARE SPARED FROM SLAUGHTER IN PA!!

We are truly proud to announce to the world that, because of an anonymous
angel from out East (actually two angels), all horses have been spared
from slaughter! They were purchased last night for an amazing $1,490
which includes the cost to the layover farm where they will wait for
transport to either the ASAP farm or to interested persons.

I have heard through people who have had direct contact with the horses
that Isn't He Classy is extremely gentle, sweet, quiet, and could easily
be taken in by a family where any member of the family could enjoy him. He has had some rough treatment as a buggy horse, but is still sound.

Sonny and Split Five Hundred are also very well mannered horses and will
make someone great pets. They have a little more refinement to them,
especially in their faces and heads. Isn't He Classy has a little more
stereotypic Standardbred head. Still, he is sweet and we are looking
forward to getting to know each one of them.

It will cost ASAP money to ship these horses. Please consider giving even
$5 to help the cause. If each person reading this blog contributed $5 or
$10 we could have the shipping fee paid in no time! The $1,490 that was
donated is an increased amount because this person and this organization
(Race Fund Inc) wanted to include price of shipping to the layover
facility, coggins and interstate health certificates!

So now a lot of hard work begins - does anyone besides Jennifer want to
consider fostering or adopting one of these horses who have been spared
the worst possible fate?

Contact us please!

I am hoping that due to the word getting out to all possible sources, the
mare has been spared and purchased.

We only have two hours left to save the other three geldings - please help!

Harness Racing's Own Charity - $$$$

Hello everyone!

Thanks to a key individual in the harness racing business, with a heart
for Standardbreds, we have raised $500 so far towards bail for the four
Standardbreds on the kill broker lot in PA.

We are waiting to hear what the kill broker will accept as a "package
deal" to bail all four out.

Our next challenge will be where they will go until they can be health
checked and have proper health certificates to come to WI or IL. Right
now we just have to concentrate on raising the rest of the bail.

Thank you for your continued suppport!

Buck - Quarter Horse - Barrels and Roping

Buck is a 22 year old Quarter horse buckskin gelding who is currently
available for adoption.

He has, naturally, some arthritis from his gaming and roping days, but has
been ridden trails this year. He is only partially sighted in one eye due
to an old injury. The other eye is clear and he sees well.

He requires senior feed and good hay in winter. Perfect horse for kids
just learning to ride, or a beginner adult that doesn't wish to compete.

Contact Sue at asapinc@mwt.net for more details.

DT, Sharon, Janimal

Please consider gifting any amount to ASAP this week as we step out to
help horses in need.

DT has been dealing with a year-old injury to his rear leg and we felt we
never had the funds to have it radiographed. A veterinarian has agreed to
travel to us this Friday to have him evaluated in hopes that we can help
him be more sound. A trip charge is $45, then radiographs are $22 each,
and I believe $45 for exam. We need to raise at least $100 for DT alone
by Friday.

Stylish Sharon has lost a great deal of weight while out on summer pasture
this year. We have brought her home and given her special feed, but she
is still not picking up weight despite deworming. We hope to be able to
have blood drawn on her to check her organ function. We also want to rule
out thyroid problems.

Janimal has dropped weight suddenly these past three weeks. I have him in
a stall as we speak, giving him soaked hay cubes and special feed. He is
not sound in pasture - may have been kicked in the stifle area or hips. When he comes up the hill at feeding time it looks as though his back legs
are wobbly and weak. When being trimmed the farrier noted it was
difficult for him to hold up one leg while standing on another on both
sides. He was dewormed and we are keeping a close eye on him. He has
been with us for ten years now and is Rachel's special ambassador for
Standardbreds at all horse demos and parades. We are really worried about
him.

Any gift is tax deductible........we really need your support!

Jumbo Shrimp's Daughter

Hello!

We have a shout out to anyone who may be interested in Jumbo Shrimp's
daughter, who is now 16.

I got a call from an Amish gentleman who has had her for quite a few
years. She has developed some navicular and can no longer do the long
miles on the road.

She is extremely gentle and smart - apparently is sound in pasture and
sound until she has put on several miles, then she gets sore.

She has many years left so if you are interested let us know because we do
believe this horse will end up in the kill pen at the next sale he goes to
unless we can help her soon.

Mysterious Calm

I just feel compelled to write about changes in my life, for good and for
sad....anxieties, fears, rejoicing, all rolled into one gal named Sue!

I am changing careers a bit, and the changeover from teacher/coordinator
to more of a human services role has been both exciting and challenging. New terms to learn, new paperwork to master, hours and hours of training
and preparation, but I was ready to self-direct my life a bit more. I
have gone between teacher, treatment foster care provider, mother,
director of ASAP, and back to teacher for over 20 years. I have worked
with the most wonderful children and young people, with all levels of
ability, and have been truly blessed.

Leaving one job for another comes with its own set of bittersweet
feelings, but during this transition time I have learned a few things. I
have noticed the swallowtails hatching and flying all over my yard, and
today I noticed the first Monarch butterfly. I hear the crickets even
louder, and the donkey even more (she knows I am home during the day at
this time!).....and have more time to spend with the things most important
to me in my life: my husband, my children, and my home (which includes
all the critters). I got to take my kids to their school registration
today at 2:30!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wow! I get to be there for them when they
wake up, and I am there for them when they go to bed. I feel I am taking
more pressure off them and my husband at this moment, even though we are
more strapped financially as I transition over to this new change.....

I look at two of my precious companions, Cookie and Tina. Tina has passed
her 16th birthday. She sleeps more now, and has lost weight. She needs a
little help at night to stay dry...(ahem...a doggie diaper), and can't
hear me call when treats are served. I am so honored to have a chance to
spend more time with her during what may be her last year with us. Cookie, too, though only 13, is struggling. She is now completely blind,
and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. She depends upon me for
water, for food, and to carry her outside to go to the bathroom. Bless
her heart, she still does so well, and listens for me and follows my voice
around the house. We need each other so much, and I am afraid to give her
permission to leave me. That is so selfish, but she has been my closest
canine friend and my heart and hers seem intertwined. I promised her this
year I would take her out on a sandbar, which we have done. She was not
so eager to go out into the water this time, and depended on me to shield
her from the waves. Instead, I cupped water into my hands and poured over
the top of her on that hot 95 degree day in the boat, and kept her cool. She rested peacefully as the boat covered the back sloughs so Craig could
fish for Northerns. She was with me, and I with her, and the world was
right. I hope we get to have one more boat ride, one more car ride, one
more Christmas......I am being so selfish....

I feel like I belong right here, 24/7. I feel totally at peace with the
world and myself, yet I know it will not last forever. Yet, today, I can
rejoice in being here, and being alive, and being all that I can be for my
family. Tomorrow will have its own set of challenges, but my life is
taking on a new direction where I will have more say in my own schedule. What a blessing is that???? And, so far, I am working with GREAT people,
who are encouraging and patient. That is what I hope to offer anyone that
I am able to serve, whether it is through teaching, through my role as a
parent, or in my new profession.

My other anxiety lies in the fact that we owe many people for much hay. Our oustanding hay bill as of last week was $2,000, and our feed bill is
at $2,800. We have had to cut the quality of our feed from 12% sweet feed
with Equishine vitamins to cracked corn mixed with just a fraction of
feed. We have two horses, DT, and Stylish Sharon who need extensive
veterinary care. We have at least 6-8 horses who need trimming. I spent
most of today fund raising, and applying for a few grants (or starting the
process). It all takes time. That gives me an uneasy feeling in my
spirit, but I know God has carried us through 18 years of His work, so I
have to believe there will be a way. Let's just hope the feed company and
hay farmers can be patient enough to give us time to get the funds
together!

Morgans Need Help

Just received a call this morning from someone who is trying to place
three Morgan horses.

These horses belong to the family, but family is becoming increasingly
unable to care for them. One of the horses is in her teens, the other
gelding and mare are 20.

Horses are healthy, dark bay, and being kept in a barn currently. They
were formerly the family's riding horses. Horses are north of La Crosse.

If anyone is interested in giving these healthy, sound, aged horses homes,
please contact the ASAP office or email Sue directly at
asapinc@mwt.net

New Horses

Horses are being adopted very quickly. An answer to prayers!
Congrats to Mary P. for her adoption of Pierogie - the mare just completed
her journey to her new home in South Dakota!

Congrats to Bren on her adoption of Mc Dominant. Bren lives in
Colorado...so Mac is making the long journey to his forever home!

As quickly as horses find homes many are being referred. We just got word
on a 3 year old sound filly in Dodgeville, two geldings at Balmoral, and
one TB show horse and one Appendix gelding in our area.

Two horses were just referred for placement in Mt. Vernon New York. So we
are asking for adopters to step forward for more information!!!

Congrats to Kathy and Andy on their adoption of Taz! He will be boarded
at the ASAP farm.

I completed a nice day of trail riding with my husband at Yellow River
State Forest in Iowa. Taser Gun seemed truly happy to be out and about. We enjoyed the beautiful trails, the hilly terrain, and the sun shining on
Yellow River with black-eyed Susan's blossoming all around us. Taser Gun
grabbed a stalk of corn in a cornfield on the ridge - as Craig was going
to take a picture the stalk fell out of his mouth - DARN IT!

Hope you all had a great weekend!

TSC

BIG SIGH.............
First, thanks to Tractor Supply Company for having us and other dog and
cat adoption groups for their Pet Awareness Week.

Unfortunately, we spent the money and time to go...but we were unable to
offer our fly masks and spray for donation price of $5 each.

We came home with no donations. We'll try Wild West Days next.....and
possibly Super Night.........any other suggestions?

Can't give up!
Happy Saturday.

Help A Horse By Purchasing Fly Masks or Spray - Only $5 In August!

Kung_fu_sadie_and_holly

Hi everyone,

We are doing a fly mask and spray drive to help horses in certain
situations this summer.

For example, DT needs diagnostics on his rear leg from an injury he
incurred while in his last adoptive or foster home. The diagnostics may
lead to surgery to scrape off any infection found on the bone.

RC needs to be relocated due to his dietary needs. He may end up coming
back to ASAP - currently he is getting alfalfa cubes soaked and special
senior feed.

Broadway Pete, Brandy, Taser Gun, Bob Cook, Arne, Stylish Sharon, Cobrador
Kosmos, all in need of farrier work - trims cost $20 each - $140

We currently have a $800 vet bill for past work.

We currently have about $2,000 in hay bills from the past year.

Most of our horses never received Potomac Horse Fever vaccine or West Nile
vaccine due to lack of finances.

Picasso, Slappin Leather, Shediditagain, Ginger, Solomon, Wrigley all
currently waiting to come to ASAP farm if they cannot be placed.

Sydney, FV Deon, Holly, Sadie, Kung Fu Guru all in need of hoof
trimming..another $100. Sadie needs sedatives from a veterinarian which
will add to that cost.

Thunder, Comet, FV Terror, Sugar all currently STILL waiting for homes.
Goodnight Starship still waiting for the right home!

Three horses waiting at Balmoral Park for pickup, but lack of space at the
ASAP farm is causing delay.

So feel free to order your fly masks or spray now, or send one to a friend
who you knows needs one or two or more!! Price doesn't include
shipping...but I can give you an idea of what that is if you ask.

Thank you in advance!
Susan
